A ger (also known as yurt, thus hereafter referred to as a ger) is a traditional felt covered internal wood supported Mongolian tent. It is large, durable, strong, easy to erect, and easy to transport. A ger differs from most tents in the fact that it is internally supported by a wood frame skeleton, thus there are no support ropes used to support it like a pavilion style tent. It is easily moved, even after it has been erected, due to the rigid wall construction design. Five moderate sized adults can easily move a ger short distances.

Our ger is made from heavy canvas. It may be treated for flame retardance and waterproofing. The ger has a large central hole in the roof originally used to let smoke from the cooking and heating fire to escape. Because of the hazards of tent fires, having open flames inside the ger is highly discouraged! But the smoke hole does allow for good ventilation, allowing air to exhaust out the top (in conjunction with rolling the canvas walls up six inches). This airflow drags away most flying, biting insects. And when covered, keeps warm air trapped inside the ger. At Pennsic (located on the Serengeti near the parking lot [area N20] ), my ger has stayed noticeable cooler than any modern tents.

Period gers had an elaborate, embroidered band of cloth that encircled the tent, securing the roof to the walls. This bellyband is very specific to the owner, and as such we don't feel it is correct to create cloned gers. We provide a rope that is more than able to duplicate the bellybands' function, while allowing you to create your own look and personality.
