The Shire of Owl's Nest - Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna

Introduction

The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is a not-for-profit educational organization of people with a common interest: the history and culture of pre-seventeenth century Europe (Middle Ages and Renaissance). We are part of the “living history” movement, much like the American Revolutionary War and Civil War groups. Instead of just reading about this period, we take a hands-on approach and learn through selectively recreating aspects of the activities, crafts, and society of the time period. We use the term "anachronism" - an anachronism is something out of its proper time, like William Shakespeare riding a motorcycle.

The SCA began as a theme party in 1966 in a backyard in Berkeley, California hosted by some college students. Following several similar parties, a group of them got together to discuss the idea of a medieval re-creation and re-enactment society. Eventually, the Californians incorporated, started forming groups, and away they went. Since 1966, the society has grown to include over 30,000 paying members in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Italy, Greece, Romania, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. Many of us guess that for every dues-paying member, there are several other active participants.

Within the context of the SCA, we call the regional divisions "kingdoms." There are currently 19 kingdoms in the SCA. The Kingdom of Meridies consists of Alabama, the Florida panhandle, most of Georgia, middle and eastern Tennessee, and a tiny part each of Kentucky and Virginia.

The local branches are called Baronies, Shires, Cantons, Colleges, or Forts depending on their membership type or size. The Shire of Owl's Nest is the local branch for the Kennesaw/Marietta/Smyrna area, and most of its members live along Georgia’s I-75/I-575 North corridor including Cobb, Cherokee, Bartow, and Paulding counties. You are not confined to participation with only one group; you may live in one area and choose to spend your time mostly with another group.

The SCA holds weekend social functions called "events", where the members attempt to further re-create the ambiance and practice the arts and sciences of the Middle Ages. The events often include tournaments in which fighters re-create armored combat while wearing historically accurate clothing. Feasts include food prepared with recipes from the period, and along with other areas of research – such as spinning, weaving, metalwork, woodwork, performing arts, games, and calligraphy – there is something for everyone who is interested in this time period.

Membership in the SCA is open to anyone who has an interest and desire to learn more about the lifestyles and customs of the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods. Membership is not required to attend meetings, functions, and events. However, if you do decide to become a member, you will receive discounts for events and a subscription to the monthly Kingdom newsletter, Popular Chivalry.

Group meetings are held on the 2nd Monday night of the month (barring holidays) at 7pm at the Cobb Central Library in Marietta. We also meet on other evenings for Arts and Sciences projects and classes – please check the meeting schedule, the calendar, or the BBS for future dates, times, and locations.

Fighter practice is held on Tuesday nights (weather permitting) at 7pm at Swift-Cantrell Park in Kennesaw.
